Breaking: Manchester United Part Ways With Head Coach Amorim

Manchester United announced in a statement on social media that the club has dismissed head coach Rúben Amorim.

The statement said:
“Rúben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.”

It continued:
“Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and the club’s leadership has reluctantly concluded that now is the right time to make a change. This decision is intended to give the team the best possible chance of achieving the highest possible league finish.”

Amorim is the second Premier League head coach to be sacked by a major club since the start of 2026. On New Year’s Day, Chelsea dismissed Enzo Maresca. The departures of both managers appear to follow a similar script. Just as Maresca had publicly criticised his club, Amorim’s comments after the recent 1–1 draw with Leeds United sparked strong reactions, as he repeatedly stressed in his post-match press conference that he had come to Manchester United as a “manager,” not a “coach.”

According to Manchester United’s statement, Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s match against Burnley.
